Internet Marketing Lessons from Jay-Z

Sometimes pop culture can give us some of our most poniente ideas. I was listening to a few Jay-Z albums today and found that his lyrics had Internet Marketing implementations.

When the, streets is watching, blocks keep clocking
Waiting for you to break, make your first mistake
Can’t ignore it, that’s the fastest way to get extorted
But my time is money, at twenty-five, I can’t afford it

From “The Streets is Watching”

Google is the streets, and they are ALWAYS watching and waiting, for you to slip. If you do they will extort you, wait I mean deindex you.

You can’t see ‘em
Though you got plans to be him
Pay homage if by chance you meet him
In his pants pocket, your advance in pedium

From “S. Carter”

An SEO an SEO Blogger does not make. Puckering up to perceived thought leaders is not the same as being able to do what you write about.

The year is ‘94 and in my trunk is raw
In my rear view mirror is the mother f@$#ing law
I got two choices yall pull over the car or
bounce on the double put the pedal to the floor
Now I ain’t trying to see no highway chase with jake
Plus I got a few dollars I can fight the case

From “99 Problems”

The mentality of every blackhat. Just push it to the limit, and deal with the results if caught.

I’m making short term goals, wonder whether foes
just put away the leathers and put ice on the gold
chilly with enough bail money to free a big Willy
high stakes, I got more at stake than Philly

From “Can’t Knock the Hustle”

Everything you do online needs to have short term repercussions. You can’t bank on three to six months from now. You have to stay focused or move. Our industry evolves to fast to take a back seat and wait.

  1. “I sell ice in the winter,
    I sell fire in hell,
    I am a hustler baby,
I sell water to a well”

As a marketer, can you sell marketing services to other marketers? Aaron, Rand and Shoe can…

    “I’m not a businessman,
    I’m a business, man”

    - Jay Z says don’t work for the Man, be an entrepreneur and work for yourself.

  2. So when I read the title of this post I thought it would be an article on how Jay-Z markets his brands and CD’s but damn this is way better. Now I thinking about Marketing the next time I listen to Jay-Z

  3. Love the analogy Brandy always help me if you put it in terms I can relate to.

  4. Dude this post rocks. I can’t WAIT for football season to start. In the meantime, I’ll be raking in dough from my Patriot-esque execution of PPC advertising!
